Retro Fitting of Schmelzer Underfloor Ventilation Systems

These channels can be used to create an underfloor cooling or drying system on an existing grain store floor, so you needn’t start from scratch.

Schmelzer Formwork is Delivered as a Flatpack

to reduce carriage costs. It is then assembled on-site and laid out with the correct spacing. Each section is bolted to the floor at regular intervals using the holes provided.

Advantages

Existing building and floor area can be adapted to a long-term, robust underfloor system without the need for a new building No holdups from bad weather – already under cover. Cost effective where an existing floor is due for repair/renovation.

Placement

Before pouring of concrete commences, additional horizontal and vertical timber struts should be positioned to maintain stability of the formwork during pouring and tamping of concrete.

Each section is joined by “winged” plates which give additional bonding and stability when the concrete sets.

Preparation of Floor

It is important for the existing floor to present a good key for the additional concrete. If in doubt, best to consult your concrete supplier / building contractor. 

With good operator care, concrete falling into the channels can be avoided. The channels can also be covered with a temporary membrane.

Channel Depth

For standard Schmelzer 300mm deep channels plus an additional 35mm in which sits the cover. The total depth of concrete required is 335mm

Reinforcement

Re-enforcement of concrete may be considered depending on anticipated load bearing requirements.

Ready for Use

Once the concrete is set, the timber struts can be removed and covers can be positioned ready for use.
